Barn Stars Animal Rescue
Barn Stars Animals Rescue is a farm animal sanctuary founded by a husband-and-wife duo, Greg & Danelle Knutson, who inherited two alpacas when they purchased their new home. Their love for animals quickly grew into a mission to rescue and provide a safe haven for farm animals in need of a proper home to live out their lives. With a 1970s-inspired vibe and a dedication to their sanctuary’s groovy theme, their property evolved into a disco-themed haven for small to medium-sized farm animals, including alpacas, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and ducks.
We were thrilled to work with Danelle for a second time! Our first opportunity was in 2017, when Danelle launched Shoetini, a fun brand that focused on in-home gatherings to try on and buy shoes while drinking martinis. Unfortunately, the pandemic wreaked havoc on this type of business model, and Danelle made the difficult choice to close. We welcomed the chance to work with her again, this time on Barn Stars Animal Rescue.

Bird’s Eye View
Before deciding to launch a website, Barn Stars’ social media was the star of its digital presence and the origin of using a fun 1970s-inspired aesthetic and vibrant photos to attract donors. Set on their brand image, the Barn Stars team came to us wanting a website design that was not only recognizable to their existing audience but would take their predefined features to the next level by highlighting their mission and, of course, making the animals the stars of the show!
Ruffled Feathers: Barn Stars Animal Rescue’s Pain Points
Operating without a website, Barn Stars struggled to reach a broader audience. Relying only on social media made it hard to share detailed information or create a smooth customer experience. Not having a central platform also limited their professional appearance and opportunities to build trust with new donors.
Our Flight Plan
Barn Stars’ vibrant 1970s-inspired aesthetic was already established on social media, which set our design initiative: create a retro, fun, music-fueled vibe that reflects the organization’s unique style and passion for their work in digital form. We focused on highlighting the founders’ connection to the animals as well as sharing their dual mission of providing sanctuary for animals and educating site and farm visitors. With a seamless blend of engaging, informative text and on-brand content details, we delivered a website that’s totally off the hook.

From the custom logo featuring stars and a funky alpaca (a staple brand element for Barn Stars) to the consistent retro aesthetic, every detail was designed to reflect the organization’s identity. Life on the Farm Gallery
We created a heartwarming photo gallery showcasing life on the farm, complete with fun captions. This feature wasn’t requested but was a creative addition to make the site feel more personal and authentic.

Omnipresent Call to Action
In order to succeed, a non-profit organization like Barn Stars Animal Rescue needs donations. We added attractive donation buttons throughout the site, including the top bar, the main menu navigation, in a banner near the bottom of every page, and in the footer of every page. Site visitors can’t miss the opportunity to support this wonderful group!

Event Showcase
Barn Stars has an annual “Rock the Barn” fundraising event as well as several opportunities throughout the year to visit the farm, interact with the animals, and learn more about the organization. We created a vibrant “Events” page to highlight upcoming and past events, further establishing the unique and fun vibe of the brand.
