Why Is Social Media Important?
And what does a hummingbird have to do with marketing?
By Nici Lucas
How many times have you said about your business, “I should be more active on social media,” or “I don’t have time to make regular posts,” or “What is the point, really?” We get it. Regularly posting and staying on top of the trends is time consuming. And it requires a concerted and focused effort to “do it right” by creating engaging visual posts, sticking with a theme, adding relevant content, and using effective hashtags.
Although regularly posting requires that concentrated effort, being consistently active on Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook is extremely important in helping:
- Build customer awareness
- Demonstrate services
- Showcase products
- Display expertise
- Keep company content current
- Search engine optimization
Plus, posting on social media is basically free advertising, so you need to take advantage of the rewards that this medium has to offer. The positives absolutely outweigh the negatives, and in today’s world, posting on social media is no longer a should do but a must do.
Regular and effective posting on social media shows that your business or product is:
- Current by posting, at minimum, once a week, but preferably several times a week
- Relevant by presenting facts, statistics, and graphics that are applicable and significant to your product or service
- Personal by sharing information, photographs, and content to indicate that people are involved in and running the business
- Creative by posting photography, art, or graphics
- Professional by keeping the posts in line with and relevant to your business
Plus, a good social media presence helps to keep the competitive edge. Almost every business has some sort of social media presence today; by not posting, your business could be losing out on potential customers. And, social media helps those potential customers visualize what you want them to see. For example, veterinary offices should share pictures of happy and healthy animals; rock stars should post intriguing concert and studio photographs; and restaurants should share enticing pictures of current menu items or meal specials.
