Featuring Monica Shallow, Founder of @methow_valley_lavender since 2022 and a client of Hummingbird Marketing Services since 2023.

Monica comes from a long line of entrepreneurs, who inspired and empowered her to establish a business of her own. She was always taught to seize every opportunity and overcome fear, acknowledging how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to be business owners. Since becoming a business owner herself, Monica has learned how much she’s fueled by creativity. From making products to problem-solving to deciding on how to collaborate with other businesses, it all feeds her soul.

The inspiration to start Methow Valley Lavender Farm came from Monica’s Grandmother, who had a lavender farm years ago and works in her garden every day. She just turned 92! It`s been a beautiful way to connect with her, and it`s brought the whole family together working in the fields.

Growing up, Monica admired watching Martha Stewart grow an empire, pushing through all obstacles along the way. Her advice to women aspiring to start their own businesses is to lean on your resources, follow in the footsteps of those who have come before you and been successful, and remember that you can do it! 💜

Fun Fact: Monica took her first steps as a baby while on one of the months-long road trips around the United States that she’d take with her parents and their friends in an old school bus that they converted into an RV.

Featuring Theresa Collier, owner of Plum, an Asian-inspired and Pacific-Northwest–style specialty clothing, wellness, and home décor store since 2014 and a client of Hummingbird Marketing Services since 2020.

Before launching her store, Theresa started a gift shop at the @bloedelreserve - a public garden on Bainbridge Island in Washington. The response she received gave her the confidence she needed to open her own store. Becoming a business owner has taught Theresa to be flexible and nimble, leaning on her team and asking for input along the way. Her advice for women on owning a business is to remember that “nothing is forever” during all the hills and valleys you’ll experience.

I first met Theresa at a Civic Dinner sponsored by Facebook for Small Business Owners in November 2019. When the Pandemic hit, Theresa reached out for help. She was one of the savvy brick-and-mortar business owners who knew she needed to up her online presence in order to communicate with and sell to her customers. Through it all, Theresa’s spirit never wavered, and she was (and still is) dedicated to the Bainbridge Island community. Plum truly is a wonderful shop on an enchanting island, and it’s all thanks to Theresa.

Ten years ago, our very own Andi Lucas decided it was time to build something she could call her own. She had a demanding job at a major online retailer in Seattle, but she wanted to put that same energy into her own business. With encouragement from her friend and now client, Laura Richer, owner of @anchorlighttherapy, she took the leap and started Hummingbird Marketing Services.

What began as a way to help Laura with her website has grown into a thriving agency that supports businesses across industries. Through her journey, Andi has learned that integrity is everything. Making clients feel valued, being responsive, and showing appreciation are key to success. She believes in leading with respect by empowering her team, encouraging ownership, and always striving for excellence. Challenges are inevitable, but staying persistent and knowing when to ask for help makes all the difference.

Her advice to women is to trust themselves and take the chance. Andi believes that when you go after what you want, the right opportunities will follow. Today is #EmployeeAppreciationDay, and I could not be more fortunate to have @hummingbirdjulia and @elizabethphillipsstudio as members of my Charm. (Did you know a group of hummingbirds is called a charm?) These two women are so creative, enthusiastic, and driven. Watching them collaborate with each other has been so impressive, and seeing their mentorship with our interns makes my heart swell.

Many years ago, before I started Hummingbird Marketing Services, I had a very stressful job at a large online retailer in Seattle. On one particular today, the stress was worse, more intense than normal. I needed to just take a break, walk around the block, clear my head, and come back to my cube with a renewed focus. When I returned, on my desk I found a can of Diet Dr. Pepper and a bag of Peanut M&Ms ─ my favorites. I looked up, and my manager just smiled at me. She knew and appreciated how hard I was working and found a way to acknowledge the difficult day I was having. That felt good and kept me going. (The sugar boost helped, too!)

Today, and every day, it is so important to acknowledge and appreciate the people on my team who help me thrive every day and have helped me grow this company to where it is today. Thank you, Julia and Elizabeth! I appreciate you so very, very much! 💜

Today is #EmployeeAppreciationDay, and I could not be more fortunate to have @hummingbirdjulia and @elizabethphillipsstudio as members of my Charm.
